The Complete Guide to Labret Piercings: Types, Aftercare, and FAQs

The labret piercing was first spotted around 3,000 years ago when it was worn by men and women who were living on the North-West American Coast. Back then, it would signify various things such as wealth or social status.

Labret piercings have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering a unique and stylish way to express individuality. Whether you're new to body piercings or a piercing enthusiast, this comprehensive guide will provide you with all the information you need about labret piercings.

What Is a Labret Piercing?

A labret piercing is a type of facial piercing that is placed through the lower lip or the area directly above the chin. It involves the insertion of a jewelry piece, commonly a labret stud or a captive bead ring, which sits either inside the mouth or above the lip, creating a distinctive look.

Contrary to what many people think, the labret piercing isn’t placed on the lip itself, and as such, it is usually classed as a facial piercing rather than a lip or oral piercing.

The labret piercing is most commonly placed below the lower lip, however, there are other variations of this piercing that we’ll cover for you below.

Types of Labret Piercings

Vertical Labret Piercing

Unlike the standard labret piercing, the vertical labret piercing does, in fact, go through the lower lip itself. If you request a vertical labret, the barbell should ideally be slightly curved in shape, allowing the piercing to sit more comfortably and securely against the natural curve of your lip. With a vertical labret, both sides of the barbell are usually visible, with one side appearing on top of the lower lip, and the other on the underside of the lower lip.

The side labret piercing is quite similar to the standard labret piercing, but is unique in that it is positioned (you guessed it!) to one side of the lower lip, rather than in the center.

How to Remove a Labret Piercing

When you’re preparing to remove your labret piercing, first make sure your hands are nice and clean. Next, gently clamp the backplate with your teeth and twist the bead to unscrew it from the bar. Keep on twisting until the bead comes off. At this point, you should then be able to slide the bar out. It might take a little practice at first, but don’t worry, you’ll quickly get the hang of it.

One note of caution: be careful that you don’t pull on the skin around your piercing when removing it. If you have any problems removing your labret piercing, drop by our shop and a member of our friendly team will be glad to help.

Does a Labret Piercing Hurt?

The pain of a labret piercing is usually considered to be minor in comparison to other types of mouth or oral piercings. While everyone’s pain tolerance and sensitivity is unique to them, most individuals describe the feeling a quick pinch. And when done by a professional like our Pierced team, you’ll be in good and caring hands.

We do want to note that you might experience some pain or discomfort in the first few days after you have your piercing. This is totally normal, along with a small amount of swelling or bruising. The area may also throb, bleed a little and/or feel sore to the touch.

How to Care for Your Labret Piercing

Proper aftercare is essential to facilitate healing and prevent complications. Here are some key steps to follow:

  • We know it's tempting, but try not to touch or play with your piercing too much, especially if you haven’t washed your hands thoroughly first
  • Use natural, skin sensitive products to gently clean your piercing, especially whilst is it healing. A lukewarm saline solution works just fine applied with a cotton ball or Q-tip.
  • When drying your piercing, use a clean paper towel
  • Use a salt solution mouthwash
  • Leave your original stud in while your piercing is healing
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and spicy food when your piercing is healing
  • Take care when eating, especially if your piercing is sore
